This Media Center was originally created as a application named “Xbox Media Center” for the original Xbox game console, but is today officially available, under the name “XBMC”, as a native application for Android, Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, iOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is also available as a standalone version referred to as XBMCbuntu. Extracted from WIKI.
XBMC is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. XBMC is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, with a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, such as podcasts from the internet, and all common digital media files from local and network storage media.
Because GenieTv has XBMC installed it can be used to play videos, playing music, viewing photos, launching applications, and as an all-around media center. It can be installed on Windows, Linux, MacOS X, Linux and on certain cracked AppleTv (although this has hardware restrictions) all with an Apple Remote. XBMC uses specialized skins, so it can replicate the appearance of an AppleTV’s Interface or the now defunct Frontrow application. This is the chosen skin we have used to simplify the use of the remote for even the youngest or the oldest in the family. This is also fondly know as a “Spouse Acceptance Factor”
We support all video formats so no need to convert anything. AVI files, ie XviD, DivX, Quicktime MOV files, FLV, Matroska files, Ogg Vorbis Videos (OGM), and many more (as previously stated, all formats FMPEG supports).
Support for streaming media over a network is built in, via SAMBA(as a client SMB), iTunes’ Streaming service, XBMSP (XBMC’s specialized streaming protocol), as well as UPnP(as a server).
GenieTv gets information from online sources, to get covers for your ripped DVD’s, videos from Youtube, Weather information, or stock quotes (through 3rd party plugins/scripts), and rip CDs complete with CDDB support, to fill the MP3s/OGGs it rips with metadata.
There are around 464 official add-on plugins for XBMC Frodo and another 70+ unofficial. These can be programs like Weather, PseudoTv and Movie Quiz or video streams like Youtube, Vimeo, Hulu, CatchupTV …… hundreds more from News, Sport, Adult, Pod Casts, Kids, Trailers, Movies, Tech and Documentaries. Official repositories There are so many plugins they are now grouped into Repositories that will auto software update from the addon author’s repository server when a fix, necessary coding changes or improvement becomes available. Unofficial add-on repositories.
XBMC has the built-in optional function to automatically download additional data like cover art and other related media artwork online through its web scrapers that looks for media in the user’s audio / video folders and their sub-directories. These “scrapers” are used as importers to obtain detailed information from various Internet resources about movies and television shows. It not only gets the movie posters (cover art), synopses but also genre classification , reviews, titles, and other similar data.
Scrapers use sites like themoviedb.org or IMDb.com to obtain thumbnails and information on movies, thetvdb.com for TV show posters and episode plots, CDDB for audio CD track listings, and Allmusic (AMG) and MusicBrainz for album thumbnails, reviews, and metadata.
